To be certified organic grass in farming is simply the absence of anything nature didn’t put there. We start with the land. Organic grass certification depends on the honor system. Where ethic fails, the path of least resistance is sought. Spraying to control is the means for crops, feeding grain for rapid growth is the means for beef. We pay with our health.
Grain-fed beef are bulked up to 1,200 lbs in 12-14 months for slaughter. We let ours grow naturally, slaughtering at the optimal weight within USDA standards, at no less than 2 years. Our oldest is 15 years and still calving. We care for our animals.
Cattle were not meant to consume grain. We take nature as our guide.
The Lewis Family Farm provided the test case for a new standard for organic grass. Federal grass (forage) fed accreditation means no grains, pure and simple. We passed with flying colors, raising the bar for all. Now with the force of federal law, the claim of ‘grass-fed’ increases the value to those who share our philosophy and mission, to provide food for life.
